Abstract

Summary The Marlborough fault system is simulated by a simple beam model. The model explains many observed features, which also appear on other transcurrent fault systems. The model is found to be compatible with tectonics theories of the region. It postulates that a NW-SE compressive force acts on the system; and this is supported by seismological and geological evidence. Using the model an order of magnitude value for rock viscosity is estimated.
