Abstract
This chapter examines the voyages of the Fregatschip Prins Willem de Vijfde to the Loango Coast. It provides a rationale for the division of the West Central African coastal region, which is often seen as a single region of trade, into two distinctive regions: the Loango Coast and the Angolan Coast. The chapter explores the specific and unusual properties of the MCC records and the importance of Malemba as a trading venue on the Loango Coast to Middelburg slave traders. It analyses the Malemba and Loango Bay merchants who engaged in slave trading negotiations with Captain Adriaan Jacobse. The chapter argues that European traders encountered a unique economic and political context for commerce on the Loango Coast, a context of locally enforced free trade among European traders balanced with an internal system of economic regulation. It focuses primarily on lists of slave purchases and sales.
