Abstract
Cytokines are produced by a diverse array of cell types in response to antigenic stimulation and are instrumental in regulating the immune response. The expression of many key cytokines is controlled at the level of transcription. Because a considerable part of the experimental data pertaining to cytokine gene expression has been gathered in the context of studying the transcriptional regulation of CD4+ T helper cells as they differentiate into cytokine-producing effector cells, this will serve as both an illustrative model and the focus of this chapter.
