Abstract

We investigate transcoding of GIF images to JPEG-LS, the new lossless image compression standard. A straight forward conversion can lead to file sizes that are significantly larger than the size of the corresponding GIF file. We show that suitable reordering of the color table leads to file sizes significantly smaller than those required by the GIF format.
