Abstract
Transboundary groundwater resources in Europe are increasingly governed by a multi-level regime composed of national, supranational and international law. The article provides an overview of essential features of the 2000 Water Framework Directive and the 2006 Groundwater Directive of the European Union. It identifies their pivotal role not only regarding the domestic groundwater law of European Union member states, but also with respect to international law pertaining to transboundary groundwater resources in Europe.
