Abstract

In his article Trans-spectator – The Spectator's bodily participation in Via Negativa's performance Bi ne bi, Tomaž Krpič explains the concept of the trans-spectator using Slovenian theatre group Via Negativa's performance Bi ne bi (Would Would Not, 2005) as an example. The trans-spectator is any spectator who is occasionally and temporarily willingly transformed into the participant of a performance by joining performers on the stage upon their invitation. The trans-spectator is thus the spectator who transgresses the fourth theatrical wall using his or her performing body changing the nature of sensual relationship with the performers. The trans-spectator moves from only visual and sonorous to holistic, but in the first place haptic, relationship with the performer. Sometimes newly established relationship is mediated by use of different material objects (for instance by lending the clothes to the performer), and sometimes by direct bodily contact (participating in the spanking game). The Trans-spectator is in quest for a unique experience of ‘touching’ the performance.
