Abstract

AbstractDriver behavior on road sections is one of the most complicated phenomena to study, particularly under mixed traffic environments. This is also interconnected with the ability of the road section, and the traffic flow characteristics of the road section at the macroscopic as well as microscopic level. In this background, an access-controlled mid-block road section was selected for video data collection. The videos were collected from an urban roadway in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. The data was extracted to know the variations in terms of longitudinal and lateral speeds, accelerations, decelerations, and lane changing behavior of the drivers. The results indicate statistically significant differences between the various vehicle types in travel speeds and accelerations. Further, it is revealed that the vehicles, particularly motorcycles, move substantially in the lateral direction. It was found that smaller vehicles show more lateral movement choice, compared to other vehicles and their presence may result in deviation from lane-wise movement.KeywordsTrajectory extractionHeterogeneous trafficTraffic data extractorLane changing behavior
