Abstract

Through a study of Jiangsu Province, this paper analyzes the little-studied process of ownership transformation to derive a better understanding of China's economic transition and regional development. It illustrates drastic disparities in pre-reform experiences and local development conditions among China's regions; among these, varied trajectories of ownership transformation have contributed greatly to the complex mosaic of uneven regional development. The author argues for the complexity of the geography of ownership transformation, and highlights the role of the state and local contexts in shaping trends in ownership transformation and regional development.
