Abstract

The affiliated medical unit, organized to serve near the front lines in one of the various theaters of war, is composed of doctors and nurses who are accustomed to working together and are familiar with the same routines. About half of these units, including the one described by Lieutenant Frid, were organized as evacuation hospitals and received their Army training by participating in Army maneuvers. Nurses for such units are recruited by the chief nurse from those who are enrolled in the War Reserve of the American Red Cross. The nurses of the University of Illinois Unit were recruited by Captain Edna B. Groppe, first chief nurse of the group andformerly associate director of the Cook County School of Nursing, Chicago.-EDIToR.
