Abstract
The future of educational research in the Asia-Pacific region depends critically on the adequacy of training for the next generation of educational researchers in these countries. The purpose of this article is to overview some of the existing provisions for formal and informal training of educational research workers in the region. The historical reliance on sending a small elite overseas for higher degrees is too expensive to implement on the scale needed, and provisions for educational research training in universities in the Asia-Pacific region are too few and too inflexible. Therefore, to cater for the needed supply of educational researchers for the region, there is an urgent need for more flexible higher degree programs that allow people to work and live in their own area while undertaking world-class programs at selected universities in the Asia-Pacific region. This article is structured using the following sections: types of research training; coursework and support materials for research degrees; research training programs in the Asia-Pacific region; flexible provisions for part-time distant research students; and concluding and forward-looking remarks.
