Abstract
For most people the experience of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder is no more serious than having a sprained ankle. The most common cluster of symptoms (pain, clicking of the joint, sticking or locking, and reduced mouth opening) is known as TMJ dysfunction. Up to 25% of the general population will experience some or all of these symptoms at some stage in their lives. Usually these settle spontaneously. If help is requested, then simple treatments such as reassurance, analgesics, provision of a soft bite guard to be worn over the lower teeth at night and/or possibly physiotherapy will help about 75% of patients over a three to six-month period.
