Abstract

Summary Various surveys were conducted in 1976‐9 which demonstrated a very high degree of credibility of the informative programmes of Israeli television, including the news broadcasts. A field experiment was conducted with ninth grade pupils in 1978‐9 with the purpose of testing to what extent it is possible to reduce the degree of credence and instead develop a more critical and selective approach. In the experiment three different training methods were tested: discussions, analysis and personal experience. The influence of the training on youth with different levels of learning ability was evaluated. Contrary to the hypothesis, the findings demonstrated that the analysis method is clearly superior to the others, and the method of personal experience was found to be next best. Generally, the training most influenced those with medium learning ability, less those with high ability and had only little influence on slow learners.
