Abstract
The education and training of first line managers or supervisors has long been neglected by employers and educational institutions. This paper is based mainly on data collected from 1,200 respondents undertaking Supervision courses offered at Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes in Australia. It is argued that the training of supervisors in TAFE and other institutions requires radical revision in order to meet the career orientations and future needs of supervisors. The role of the supervisor is undergoing considerable change and will be of increasing importance to organisations in the future.
