Abstract
Many experiments have shown that workers of the army ant, Neivamyrmex nigrescens (Cresson), will respond with following to relatively non-volatile components of an odor trail deposited from the hindgut of conspecifics. By using a 2-story trail-following apparatus, this study shows that army ants can follow nestmates by also responding to volatile chemicals that are: (1) present in the deposited trail; and (2) emitted by the ants from sources other than the deposited trail.
