Abstract

To accommodate the exponential growth of Internet traffic, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks have been widely deployed in modern communication networks. IP (internet protocol) over WDM is being envisioned as a more efficient solution compared to other technologies (e.g., IP over ATM over SONET/SDH over WDM, IP/SONET/WDM, etc.). In this paper, we discuss current issues and challenges in traffic engineering for IP over WDM networks. In particular, we investigate practical aspects such as architectural alternatives, routing, signaling and survivability. Then a constraint-based routing scheme in the GMPLS context is proposed to meet different optical quality of service requirements. The performance of the algorithm is studied using simulations.
