Abstract
Objective: Perform the translation and cross-cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese (pt-BR) of the Nutrition screening tool for childhood cancer (SCAN) by evaluating the degree of understanding of health professionals. Methods: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation process involved the following steps: translation, synthesis of translations, back-translation, discussion with Expert Committee and pre-test, and evaluation of the cultural adaptation process. The questionnaire was pre-tested on 35 health professionals (physicians, nurses, and nutritionists) who deal directly with the care of children with cancer to verify its suitability in this population. Results: Small changes were needed in the Nutritional Screening Tool for Childhood Cancer – SCAN (PT-BR) instrument for the Brazilian context. The median of comprehension values was greater than 3 for all questions. None of the questions or even the tool as a whole presented more than 15% of the values of insufficient understanding or that generated doubts. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Nutrition screening tool for childhood cancer (SCAN) tool was well understood by the study population and proved adequate to proceed to the validation stage of the tool for further application in the hospitalized pediatric cancer population.
