Abstract

Luni Panchayat Samiti (a Community Development Block in the district of Jodhpur) is located in the arid zone of Rajasthan and is spread over an area of about two thousand sq kms. The population growth of this tract has been undergoing a linear escalation over the years, registering a threefold increase during the period 1921-1971. The density of population per sq km has consequently grown from 15 in 1921 to 48 in 1971, which is quite high considering arid zone standards. The major occupation of the people in the region is cultivation, and with the increase in the working force overcrowding on agricultural land has been increasing particularly as the region lacks a diversified economic base. This has created problems of over-exploitation of marginal lands and, without any increase in irrigation facilities, the cropped area has increased by 21 percent during 1964-1974. The percentage of literacy is quite low and feelings of factionalism are high. The people, by and large, are traditionalists and socio-religious feelings have often been found to override prudence. Consequently, the adoption of innovations in the region has made small progress.
