Abstract

Generated by the desperate need for improved efforts at prevention and treatment of people who are HIV positive or have AIDS a discussion between an American nurse and a South African professor of nursing in October 2000 focused on the roles of South African nurses and traditional healers in the epidemic and the potential for collaboration between them. Ellen Giarelli one of the authors of this article traveled to South Africa to meet with Leana Uys a professor and head of the School of Nursing at the University of Natal-Durban KwaZulu-Natal province. Uys estimated in 2000 that 25% of the provinces professional population including nurses and teachers would die of AIDS over the next 10 years. If this projection proves accurate the epidemic will devastate public services nationwide especially education and health care. (excerpt)
