Abstract
The aim of the article is to investigate the relationship between trade and economic security. Economic research over several decades has shown that the high level of growth and success of the catching-up economic development of small and medium-sized economies is due to export-oriented trade. A correlation analysis has been performed to analyze the relationship between the arithmetic mean of fulfilled economic security indicators and exports as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product of the EU Member States. In the course of the study, the levels of exports of goods and services from Bulgaria for 2019 have been established. There is a steady trend for exports of goods with a low degree of processing, as well as raw materials and goods with relatively low added value. Specific recommendations have been made to increase the level of economic security.
