Abstract

Key Messages The relationship between economic transition and population change is examined in 19 mining census subdivisions of northern Ontario for the period 1991 to 2011. In 13 localities, three transition variants are traced to the stages of in‐ or ex‐situ post‐dependence in our Resource Dependency Model. Transition does not generate significant nor sustainable population growth but is necessary to avoid economic vacuity and extensive population loss.
