Abstract
Summary A sixty year old patient with primary carcinoma of the cervical and upper thoracic trachea was submitted to surgical resection of the trachea with preservation of the larynx. A mediastinal tracheostomy was performed after resection of the manubrium and medial portions of the clavicles using the technic described by Grillo [4]. A distal laryngeal stoma was created in the neck at the level of the cricoid cartilage. After recovery from this surgical procedure voice rehabilitation has been accomplished by training the patient in the use of an acrylic connecting tube that allows him to use his own larynx for phonation on an intermittent basis. This atypical problem in speech rehabilitation was demonstrated by sound motion picture.
