Abstract

Infrared absorption spectroscopy by solar occultation from a balloon platform is used to measure the concentration profiles of minor constituents in the stratosphere. The instrument is a grating and grille spectrometer scanning narrow spectral intervals, in different orders of the grating in a selected sequence for sunset or sunrise periods. The dispersion of the results obtained by various techniques underlines the crucial question of the precision. The comparison with previous results, obtained with the same instrument, points out a natural variability, while the comparison with other experiments is made confused by the difference in the techniques as well as in the analysis method. Intercomparison campaigns help to analyse these differences eliminating the natural variability, and also help to improve the precis ion of each instrument by a better choice of the parameters.
