Abstract

In this chapter we will study traces and norms, which are very useful analytic tools in finite fields. Traces and norms can be computed in any field, finite or not; for example in the field of complex numbers the trace of z equals twice the real part of z, and the norm of z equals the square of the absolute value of z. In finite fields, however, the definition is subtler and the results more useful.
