Abstract
This paper uses the limited number of studies available to date to compare the trace metal content of sediments of some important natural waters in Luzon Island (Philippines), which include: Laguna Lake and five of its tributary rivers, streams of a proposed model city (Lungsod Silangan), Agno River used to irrigate extensive rice farms, Manila Bay (the country's principal domestic and international port), and Bolinao Bay, which abounds in coral reefs. The average total Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Hg, and Cd content suggest, in general, relatively low to moderate pollution. The major association of the metals in the sediments were: Cu with organic matter, Zn with organics and reducible Fe/Mn oxides, and Fe and Mn with reducible Fe/Mn oxides. The order of chemical extractability of the metals from the sediment matrix was Mn > Cu > Zn > Fe for lake sediments, Mn > Zn > Cu > Fe for river sediments, and Mn > Cu = Zn > Fe for bay sediments.
