Abstract

The concentrations of Cd, Cu, Co, Mn, Ni and Zn have been determined in water samples collected at the Canadian Ice Island in the Arctic Ocean north of Ellesmere Island in June 1985. Two sets of measurements were made, one at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography and the other at the University of Goteborg. The agreement between the two sets of results is good. The origin and persistence of a distinct trace metal maximum coincident with the nutrient maximum in the upper halocline is discussed. Trace metal budgets calculated for the Arctic Ocean help to identify the most important sources of metals in the Arctic.
