Abstract

In this study, we will analyze the precursor approach proposed by the countess of Martel, known as Gyp (1849-1932), towards women’s infidelity and the street harassment faced by her heroines. In L’Amour aux champs (1913), Gyp refuted several of the myths and gender stereotypes whereby the patriarchal society still perpetuates both issues. The French writer also broke that fine line which identified Parisian women to licentiousness in contrast to the supposed virtuousness of the rural ones. In order to break down these standardized models, Gyp will show that, in many cases, female adultery resulted from the psychological violence that some husbands inflicted on their wives by confining them in a lethargic rural environment.
