Abstract

Summary Objective: The use of standardized patients in medical education and assessment has been accepted widely and finds a chance of implementation in our country as well. The aim of our study is to determine the opinions of students in Adnan Menderes University (ADU) and Ondokuz May›s University (OMU) Medical School about the use of standardized patients in the assessment of doctorpatient communication skills. Methods: A total of 354 ADU and OMU 2 nd or 3 rd grade students whose performances were assessed by standardized patients were included in the study. Students were asked to fill out a questionnaire consisting of 8 questions rated by Likert scale of 10. Results: The majority of students wanted the use of standardized patients throughout the medical education. The most prevailing opinion among students was that the standardized patient performance helped them to feel themselves as a physician. Conclusions: Since communication skills are used throughout the medical professional life, it is important to generalize the use of standardized patients to improve communication skills of medical students.
