Abstract

Background: Toxoplasmosis [TP] is a zoonosis caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Cats are the main reservoir for this parasite. Humans become infected in multiple ways and one way is via vertical transmission. Foetal infection rate depends on the trimester at which infection occurs – 25% and 65% for the first and third trimester respectively. However, earlier transmission causes more severe manifestations. Congenital toxoplasmosis [CTP] is subclinical in 75% of cases, but if apparent then chorioretinitis, intracranial calcifications and hydrocephalus are known as the classic triad of CTP. This presentation describes a case of a pregnant patient with a painful axillary lump as a result of TP infection.
