Abstract
Abstract One of the initial challenges of the earliest cells would have been the ability to detoxify heavy metal ions and metalloids. This article focuses on microbial pathways for transport and biotransformation of the metalloid arsenic and the heavy metals cadmium and zinc. The emphasis is on recent findings on transporters and enzymes responsible for their uptake, efflux, redox cycling, and methylation.
