Abstract

The place of application of an insecticide to an insect affects toxicity (Fisher 1952). In our study of the toxicity of Zectran® (4-dimethylamino-3,5-xylyl methylcarbamate), several formulations were tested for their effects on the western spruce budworm, Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman. One of the formulations was a water-soluble salt of Zectran (Zectran hydrochloride). We noted that discrete droplets could be formed and applied at any point on the bud worm larva. Acetone solutions of Zectran do not remain at the point of application, but they spread out over several segments. The ability of the water-soluble formulation to remain at the site of application was used to investigate the effect of application site on mortality.
