Abstract

α-tomatine, a glycoalkaloid present in solanaceous plants, exerts an antibiotic effect on Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) larvae. Increased concentrations of α-tomatine (25–200 ppm) resulted in decreased larval survival, lower pupal weights, an extended pupation period, and a prolonged period of adult emergence. The LC50, for α-tomatine fed to C. capitata larvae was estimated to be 52.7 ppm.
