Abstract

A study of rat urinary excretion of lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and muramidase was carried out following the administration of a high dose (2 g/kg) of cephaloridine, a known nephrotoxic antibiotic (12–15). Urinary lactate dehydrogenase and muramidase levels were highly elevated 0–12 hr after the drug, while alkaline phosphatase levels did not alter considerably from the normal values. Kidney protein levels and lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase activities were reduced 30 hr after the drug, while the serum proteins and enzyme levels did not show significant changes. Evidence was presented to show that the study of urinary enzyme excretion could prove a sensitive early indicator of kidney damage.
