Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce readers to the history of town planning in the United Kingdom from the nineteenth century to the 1980s and to examine its relationship to housing, then to examine the planning system and housing in the 1990s and to consider some future causes for concern. The chapter specifically focuses on: Legislative developments, 1875 to the 1930s. Post-war legislation. Planning, housing and design in the post-war years. Planning and private sector house-building in the 1960s and 1970s. Planning in the 1980s. The planning system and housing in the 1990s. Environmental assessment.
