Abstract

Due to resolving major technological challenges Additive Manufacturing (AM) is on the brink of industrialization. In order to overcome organizational challenges and operate capital-intensive AM equipment in an economically viable manner, this paper focuses on the prerequisites for adaptation of the operating curves model to AM. Originally developed for conventional manufacturing technologies, the model allows for quantifying the performance of a production system in terms of productivity and throughput time depending on the current work in process. Those metrics enable sound shopfloor-related operational and strategic decisions and eventually support the creation of customer value besides merely technological aspects.
