Abstract

It is beyond doubt that we need better indicators of the ‘output’ side of the innovation process. After a brief review of recent work on indicators, we present a new approach towards output indicators which consists of counting innovations which are mentioned in the ‘product news’ columns of trade journals. We discuss this method and present a simple but hopefully useful classification scheme for such innovations. Then we report results from trial innovation counts in the Netherlands and give some hints about the possible use of such data.
