Abstract

Since its introduction, the fuzzy logic controller has been successfully applied to a large variety of applications. Yet, this controller has its limitations, which are mainly due to: (1) the lack of context dependency, (2) complex systems usually require a large rule base, (3) dependent input variables are difficult to partition, and (4) no disfunction between the expert knowledge and the partitioning of the variables is made. To overcome some of those limitations, based on the recently proposed concept of a flexible defined linguistic variable, in this work a new type of fuzzy controller is proposed: the flexible fuzzy controller. Due to its structure this controller allows the user to embed more knowledge. In addition to some illustrative examples, a simulation study of an inverted pendulum is used to demonstrate some features of this controller
