Abstract

Today's software intensive systems offer a high number of functional features. Such systems are called multi-functional. The overall functionality of such systems is very complex and cannot be captured in a monolithic specification. In fact a structuring the functional specification is indispensable requisite for complexity reduction. For a formal modeling of the functionality of a system in a structured way we need the following concepts• formal models of functions of systems including their behavior• formal notions of sub-functions of the functionality of systems• formal models of feature interaction• concepts to combine functions in a controlled way to a super-functionality taking into account the feature interactionsThe decomposition of the overall functionality of a multifunctional into a hierarchy of sub-functions leads to structured functional view onto systems. We consider the systems together with their operational contexts. The systems typically interact with their contexts. When breaking down the functionalities of systems into sub-functions their contexts have to be broken down into analogy into sub-contexts.
