Abstract

It is suggested that by adopting a "positive" approach to labour as an alternative to watchful expectancy, childbirth can be made shorter and less painful. The liberal use of surgical induction, oxytocin infusion, analgesic drugs, extradural anæsthesia, and forceps delivery has become the policy of one hospital. With this regimen labour rarely lasts more than 8 hours.
