Abstract

interested in using CAM, most lack the confidence and knowledge to advise them appropriately. The current ad hoc approach to CAM education limits midwives’ ability to engage with women interested in using the therapies and may undermine the therapeutic relationship. Midwives need basic education on the evidence for common modalities and how to refer women appropriately. They should also be equipped with the ability to seek out reliable information on a broad array of therapies and have an appreciation of the importance of cultural sensitivity regarding use of CAM. Conclusion: Given the high prevalence of CAM use, there is an urgent need to enable midwives to support women to make informed decisions and to promote inter-professional communication across all pregnancy care provider groups. With the appropriate education and support, midwives can form an important link in a pluralistic model which acknowledges and respects different approaches to maternity care.
