Abstract

The study investigated the spatial distribution of school facilities in Ikot Ekpene LGA of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria with a view to apply Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technique in educational facilities management planning. The study used the administrative map of the study area collected from the local government as the base map. Information on the number and addresses of the educational facilities available in the study area were collected from the State Secondary Board, Uyo while the coordinates of the schools were obtained during field survey using Global Positioning System (GPS). These data were incorporated into GIS environment and analysed using Arc Map 9.3 software. The study revealed a random to near concentration of the schools in particular wards in the LGA with some left areas educationally deprived. The study also shows the pattern of facilities distribution in the study area. DOI: 10.5901/mjss.2013.v4n15p77
