Abstract
The nature of previous short-title catalogues is discussed, and the special problems arising from the quantity of eighteenth century printing and its spread outside London are considered. Discussions of the subject up to date are outlined. While it will soon be possible to use computers to make a rough but useful list of eighteenth century books, the state of biblio graphical knowledge about such books means that about ten years' well-directed research is needed before an edited catalogue can be produced. The organization of the work and details of information to be recorded are also considered. Revised version of a paper read to the Rare Books Group of the Library Association at Keele, toth April 1970.
