Abstract

A medium-term research is currently running at MTA EK with the objective to shed light on the potential role of modern Thermodynamics in Structural Integrity calculations of large-scale pressure systems. Many aspects of the prevailing Structural Integrity analysis methodologies have been evaluated, in order to identify strong and weak points of Structural Integrity in this day and age. Despite the fact that in the last decades, a large number of increasingly complex engineering structures have been built and operated safely on the basis of traditional engineering approaches –widely applied in Structural Integrity assessments–, there exist inherent problems even at the theoretical foundations of the methodologies. Generalized models of Structural Integrity, based on modern Thermodynamics, seem to be a promising approach to build a sound foundation for future Structural Integrity computations.
