Abstract

Active magnetic bearing (AMB) requires multiple displacement sensors. Installation of these sensors causes several problems; high sensor cost, installing space and noncollocation of the actuator and the sensor. To overcome these problems, self-sensing technique has been proposed. In this paper, nonlinear characteristics of the differential transformer type displacement estimation are analyzed. Then a nonlinear compensation method is proposed and applied to an internal permanent magnet type AMB. The experimental results using proposed self-sensing show good properties compared with the results using eddy current type sensor and high feasibility of the practical use of self-sensing magnetic bearing.
