Abstract

The paper deals with the development of a kit for converting a conventional vehicle into a Through-The_Road (TTR) hybrid solar vehicle. The transformation consists in inserting solar cells on vehicle bonnet and hoof, an additional battery and two electrically driven wheel-motors in the rear wheels. The control of such vehicle is performed via a Vehicle Management Unit (VMU) which reads data from the OBD port. A prototype is being developed, starting from a FIAT Punto. The interaction between the driver and the vehicle represents a critical point in the operation of such system. Therefore, a study of driver intention has been performed, both in off-line and in real-time, by analyzing the data provided by OBD port. Moreover, a Matlab/Simulink model of the hybridized system has been developed, including driver behavior, in order to analyze their interactions and to properly design the VMU control strategies.
