Abstract

SU(3) lattice gauge theory with four flavors of very light fermions is simulated on 4 × 8 3 and 6 × 10 3 lattices to observe the return of the finite temperature transition now associated with chiral symmetry restoration. For masses = 0.0375, 0.0250 and 0.01250 (in lattice units) the transition is first order on the 4 × 8 3 lattice. Coexisting states are found in all cases. On the 6 × 10 3 lattices long runs with m = 0.0250 also favor a first order transition. The discontinuities in the chiral condensates, Wilson-Polyakov lines and internal energy densities are measured at the transition. The transition temperature is found T c /Λ MS =(2.14±0.10) .
