Abstract

Numerous challenges are being encountered by the modern day process industry, including tightening requirements for product quality, pressures to save energy and the environment, and increasing time-based competition. While the awareness of the benefits of model-based control and optimization is growing in different fields of industry, archives of process measurement data are increasingly being seen as a potential source of useful information which can be exploited in the optimization of processes and improvement of productivity, cost-efficiency and product quality. In this paper, we demonstrate how modelling tools may assist in these efforts by realizing them into a piece of advanced modelling software, which is designed to facilitate industrial analysis and process development work. The computational tools are encoded into a standalone application working on the Matlab software platform. The usage of the selected modelling tools are demonstrated in this paper by using an industrial data set from a fluting (corrugated medium) manufacturing process. The results show that modelling tools such as those presented here may bring additional value to many industrial data analysis tasks.
