Abstract

This paper provides an overview of evolving integrated safety management practices, policy and principles in the US. Its purpose is to present an understanding of US safety management approaches and terminology with a view toward their application for a joint program of the US and Russia in the field of nuclear materials safety management. Recognizing that there are many ways to approach the issue of managing safety for workers, the public and the environment, this presentation offers a basis for initiating discussion and furthering our understanding of parallel technical methods and management approaches which might be mutually adaptable in both countries.
