Abstract

With the goal of moving toward a comprehensive theory of visual search that could predict visual search performance for a wide range of applied visual tasks, this chapter describes how a comprehensive theory of human performance that integrates a Type 1 theory of central cognitive control with function-specific Type 2 theories can be used to generate new task-specific Type 3 theories in the domain of visual search. The chapter briefly describes the particular comprehensive theory that is used, the EPIC (executive process-interactive control) cognitive architecture and two specific sets of visual search models that were built using the EPIC architecture. It discusses a number of components that may be essential for any comprehensive model of visual search. This includes the integration of existing theories that pertain to visual perception and oculomotor control; the identification and refinement of task strategies; and a means of incorporating or subsuming other “stand-alone” theories of visual search that are not constructed using a comprehensive theory.
