Abstract
Blood transfusion is a potentially lifesaving procedure frequently performed by all medical and surgical specialties. Concerns regarding the adverse potential effects of transfusion (increased infection, immunosuppression, death) have been raised, and most current guidelines propose more restrictive transfusion policies.1 Even so, the evidence supporting restrictive transfusion policies is acknowledged to be weak,2 and some studies have suggested increased morbidity and mortality in populations similar to patients undergoing vascular intervention and surgery.
