Abstract
What follows was inspired by the interchange between Vicente Navarro and Sheila Collins on the Rainbow Coalition (MR, June 1987) and the prominent role Jesse Jackson plays in the Democratic presidential race. The contributions of Navarro and Collins made this long-time reader of Monthly Review aware that the Rainbow Coalition, which is largely focused around the Jackson presidential campaign has the potential to "expand its electoral base" and become a "social democratic force that will humanize and liberate our society." To do so it must deal with "racial division…the ruling class's most powerful weapon and working class's worst enemy."This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
